Volnay

Volnay is a dry Pinot Noir from Burgundy, France, known for being light, silky and seriously elegant. It's packed with red cherry, raspberry and strawberry flavours and pairs beautifully with roast chicken, duck, pork, salmon, mushroom dishes and creamy cheeses.

Taste:

Volnay sits firmly on the elegant end of the red wine scale. It's usually light to medium-bodied and dry, with fresh acidity, fine tannins and lots of fragrant red fruit.

Expect strawberry, raspberry, red cherry and cranberry alongside floral notes of violet and rose, gentle spice and subtle earthiness. As it ages, Volnay can develop more savoury flavours of mushroom, dried herbs and forest floor.

If you normally avoid red wine because you find it too big, heavy or tannic, Volnay might just bring you over to the dark side.

Food Pairings:

The trick with Volnay is not overpowering it.

Try it with roast chicken, duck breast, crispy duck, pork tenderloin, glazed ham or veal. It's also a brilliant red wine for fish such as grilled salmon, roast salmon or seared tuna.

For vegetarian dishes, pair it with mushroom risotto, wild mushroom pasta, truffle pasta, lentils, roasted vegetables or a creamy vegetable tart.

Volnay also works beautifully with Brie, Camembert and Comté, making it a very solid addition to a cheese board.

Volnay is a small appellation in Burgundy's Côte de Beaune, sitting just south of Pommard.

The appellation specialises in red wine made from Pinot Noir and has built a reputation for producing some of Burgundy's most fragrant, refined and elegant reds.

Many of Volnay's best vineyards have Premier Cru status. Despite its delicate reputation, good Volnay can age beautifully, developing much more complex earthy and savoury flavours over time.
